Central Saint Giles’ community engagement strategy

The businesses behind Central Saint Giles are engaging with the local community, with our help.
Legal & General Property, together with Mitsubishi Estate Company, is the major investor in Central Saint Giles, a major central London residential, office and retail construction project due to be completed in Spring 2010. The investors, architect, developers and building contractors alike agreed that Central Saint Giles should benefit the wider local community, which is an area of regeneration, and not just the families, businesses and retailers who will be moving in, with no need to wait until construction is finished.

Three Hands has helped by devising a community partnership strategy for Central Saint Giles. The strategy is based on employee-led initiatives, engaging staff from Legal & General, Mitsubishi, Bovis (building contractors) and Stanhope (development managers) in activities that will make use of their core skills as well as testing and developing them in new ways. The main partners to date include St Joseph’s RC Primary School and Phoenix Community Gardens. All activity with the school, from providing Governors to offering expertise with premises improvement initiatives, is designed to support it in improving its OFSTED scores. The next stage of the Central Saint Giles community partnership will see activity broaden out to more local community organisations. With several companies and a number of community organisations involved, this will be a truly collaborative community partnership strategy.

“Three Hands have provided a key role in making sure that expectations and the pace of the project is working for all parties – something that is often overlooked. They have also ensured that there is a very clear social outcome from all of these activities, with a focus on the school’s OFSTED improvements. The partnership is also a great way of thanking the local community for their support through the planning process when Central Saint Giles was at its inception”

Graham Precey, Head of CSR, Legal & General Group
